In September 2016, extreme rains in the northern portion of the Cedar River watershed prompted worries in communities downstream. Facing the second highest crest in history, Cedar Rapids jumped into action to build temporary flood protection to prevent massive losses similar to those experienced in 2008. Gazette photographers documented how the city crews, businesses, residents and volunteers stood together against a wall of water. Proceeds will be donated to The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to be distributed to flood-affected businesses.
